Artemisio

1hr 15 mins from Villa Averoff, Evia

Village on the north coast of the island, famed as the scene of the first naval victory of the Greek fleet over the Persians in 480 B.C. Artemision is a cape, looking across the straits towards Mt Pelion. The old name of the village was "Kourbatsi" but was renamed Artemisio in honour of the goddess Artemis whose temple was situated in the area of St. George Monastery. A tour of the village, where there are still houses dated from the Turkish domination, is worthwhile. The view is breathtaking as one can see as far as Mt Pelion and the Sporades islands.
